This is sold direct from the bolt in sizes from quarter metres or we have a selection of pre-cut fat quarters, half metres and jelly rolls for the quilting fabrics.

Fat Quarters

Fat quarters are versatile pieces of fabric, typically measuring around 50cm x 55cm (approx 19.5″x21.5″), created by cutting half a metre of fabric in half across its width. Most fat quarter fabric comes from standard quilting fabric bolts with a width of approximately 110cm/44″, making them perfect for any fat quarter fabric project and to make beautiful patchwork quilts.

Dressmaking Fabric

We currently have a small range of beautiful dressmaking fabrics including 100% cotton, viscose, double gauze and linen/rayon blend.

Which Fabric is Best?

If this is your first dressmaking project and you’re looking for the best fabric, then the best beginner fabric is cotton. It is a natural product which makes comfortable breathable clothing. Compared to other fabrics, cotton is easy to sew and comes in a variety of fabric weights.

How Much Fabric Will I Need?

Fabrics come in two standard widths – nominally 115cm and 145cm. The narrower width is traditionally used for quilting projects but can also be used for dressmaking.

All sewing patterns will tell you the length of fabric required using both 115cm and 145cm fabric widths. As a rough guide, using the 145cm width, trousers use 1.5metres, a fitted dress 1.5 metres and a dress with a full skirt will use approximately 3 metres.

Please be advised that dressmaking fabric is sold in ½ metre increments and that 1 unit equals ½ metre. For example, If you require 1.5 metres, please add 3 units to your basket.
